Stop Saying "We Improved Culture." Start Saying This Instead.

Stop Saying "We Improved Culture." Start Saying This Instead.

There's a reason some HR leaders get invited into every strategic conversation in the building, and others get told "we'll circle back" and never hear from that meeting again. It's rarely about the quality of the work. It's almost always about the language.

"We improved culture" doesn't survive a budget review. It's vague, it's unmeasurable, and every leader in the room has heard it a hundred times without ever seeing a number attached. Your CEO isn't dismissing the work. They genuinely don't know what it's worth.

This is the M in the IMPACT™ framework I built for exactly this problem: Measure.

Instead of "we improved culture," try: "engagement scores rose in three departments, and those same departments saw a measurable drop in absenteeism this quarter." Instead of "we rolled out a new onboarding program," try: "we cut new-hire ramp time by three weeks, which lowers the risk of early turnover and gets people productive faster." Same work. Completely different reception in the room.

Dave Ulrich has said it more plainly than most: HR's value isn't determined by what HR does, it's determined by what the business receives. A CEO doesn't need to understand your process. They need to understand what it's worth to them.

This is the whole case for moving from transactional HR to transformational HR to being a true stakeholder in the business. Transactional HR processes paperwork. Transformational HR runs programs. A stakeholder walks into the room already speaking the language of the P&L, because they've done the translation work before the meeting, not during it.

You don't need a new dashboard to start this. You need one metric, tied to one outcome, said in one sentence your CEO already understands.

Pick one HR win sitting in your files right now. What's the dollar-language version of it? Try writing it in the comments, I'll help you sharpen it.
